Welcome to the Woodsies'. woodsfamhobbyfarmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10027388629769312129noreply@blogger.comBlogger86125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4514461402152011931.post-7487831839376339532014-11-19T13:29:00.000-07:002014-11-19T13:29:17.410-07:00Let's Start With Spring 2014Spring on the farm is our welcoming of young animals. This year was no different than the others, we got more birds. Chickens, ducks and turkeys, oh my! We had the standard bird losses for several reasons, one being young birds are fragile. We had a few get trampled and a few disappear, it's pretty standard around here. We have one on the block, so to speak...Thanksgiving is next week...

We welcomed several litters of kittens and sent them out into the world, to neighboring farms. We lost several cats this year, a new kitten this past week being the most recent. We didn't even really get a chance to know her. Some of our "seasoned" kitties must have met with bigger predators and I know of one who worked his way down a few miles to another farm.

We had 4H pigs this year, from April to August. Each of the kiddos had a pig and we had an extra in case of any loss, four total. Kyleigh had Sue, Lucy had Bubba and Nick had Awesome Sauce, and then there was Extra. We had a good time watching them play around but when it was time to go I can't pretend I was too heartbroken. For any of you who don't know, pigs STINK. It's a horrid smell and what better way to attract flies than with horrid smells. I think we still have a fly in the house and it's been way below freezing for a week. There will have to be adjustments made before the next cycle of pigs. Period.

In addition to the new animals, we added some structures to the grounds. We now have the "big" barn started and the "mini" barn up for the birds and bunnies. The big barn has the first of three sections up making a sort of lean to with stalls and room for some tools. We still have work to do on the mini barn but it is functional. The trim pieces never went up and we haven't put up the chicken run yet. I have a really hard time making design decisions, I'm thinking Brian will end up just doing it himself this next spring when he tackles the fencing and new pig area. There's always something to do on a farm, hobby my butt!

I'll be back soon with a summer re-cap.
I realize it's been quite some time since I've posted on here. It's been a L O N G several months in the Woods home. Last I reported, we'd had a bedroom update, a shed fire and some really awesome Volkswagen commercials. I know, I know...but they really are overly amusing to me, I still watch them from time to time.

I'll try to remember most things that've happened in the last several months, it's been a big year. I apologize for the lack of photos and such, I'm really one of the world's worst when it comes to pictures. For Reals! Just ask my parents... sorry Mom, I really do intend on mailing out the kids' school pics... Soon-ish...

So, I'll post a little at a time for you all. Hoping to gather a little more steam in the future and get back up in this "blog saddle." Wish me luck.

Hello Everyone and welcome back. Today I've decided to share a few pics of Nick's bedroom update. Over Christmas break we decided to throw caution to the wind and just "do something" inside the house. It's been overwhelming trying to figure when/where any monies should be spent. We have so many projects needing completion it's hard to decide where to start. So, until we can afford to "finish" the basement, put new floors and trim in, etc. we decided to paint. In all honesty, I would love to be able to rip the drywall out and start over with a fresh canvas. There are so many layers of paint and drip spots from previous owners it looks like the rooms are melting in places. We also need to replace windows and closet doors, this is why we baby step. So without further ado...here are a couple of before shots from this summer when we de-cluttered and deep cleaned.

Yes, the dog kennel has moved to it's new home...we aren't fostering anyone right now.

When we first moved in, all three kiddos shared this room. We fit a double bed, a twin, two chests of drawers and two bookcases in here...it's a big room. Eventually the girls decided to move downstairs to the unfinished basement, little brother was cramping their style. We have worked on Kyleigh's room and she's waiting on the finish work. You can see pics of the progress here.

The result for now.

We weren't able to paint the desk and nightstand yet, I think they will probably end up brown. The bed took two cans of paint and still isn't "hunter's" orange but Nick likes it, that's all I needed to hear. He's been very excited about this update so far. He actually makes his bed every morning now, Fan-Tastic! Nothing like a little Mossy Oak decor for a Montana boy's bedroom.

Why can't they just leave things alone? LOL

Howdy Do all. The last week has been a blur of chaos with an extra serving of WTHeck? Last Friday, one week ago today, we were settling in a bit after picking the boy up from the bus stop. We came in the house, got comfy and prepared to chill... HA! I wish! Actually, I was on this technological nightmare and Brian was doing his most favorite of things, cleaning/rearranging/sorting in the basement. Yes, you read it right...I'm a lucky girl! Anyhow, Nick let the dog out to run and decided to join him. Mr. Brown was barking enough to get Nick's attention, Like, Really. I hear a squeal and then Nick's plowing through the door terrified.

All I can see is FEAR and all I hear is FIRE! Brian only hears FIRE!

Brian was trying to get upstairs thinking I had a kitchen fire or something... I was haulin' out the door and around the house... This is what greeted me...

I was actually speechless. ME. SPEECHLESS!

Brian made it outside and we just kinda stood there for a minute. At this point it was obvious there was nothing we could do, it was large and in charge. We called 911 and stood outside waiting. As you can see in the photo, our propane tank is between our house and the shed.....Major concern there! Here's another look.

It had started to <strike>calm</strike> burn down by the time the crew arrived. It's good to have friends and neighbors, ours are the best! Nick and I stayed on the opposite end of the house in case the fire spread but we could see the propane tanks for the grill blowing light torches and then a rogue camp fuel bottle managed to escape it's confines. What a sound, whistling through the air towards us after diverting away from our house and Nick's bedroom window. It landed about 10-15 feet in front of Nick and me. Then there were the pops from assorted spray cans, inching up the 'ole tension meter... It didn't last long.

In all honesty, I'm pretty ok with it. I'm trying to see the bigger picture like we did with Hurricane Katrina, a blessing in disguise if you will. Fortunately we don't have to go through as much this time, emotionally. Most everything is replaceable, even the girls' Christmas horse tack. The saddle loss is a big downer too. The worst was knowing our bunnies couldn't get out. They would've been gone before I even saw the fire, hopefully from the smoke inhalation. Four sweet little bunnies, bless them. I had been out haying the horses earlier in the morning. I also had the chicken scraps to deliver so I left the run open so they could free range for the day...note where the run is now attached to no coop. Grateful birds, Grateful people, Grateful cat....Yes, when I had been out there in the morning there was a loud calling from inside the shed. Nutters had been closed in overnight and was none too pleased.

So, in reflecting upon another WoodsFam life moment, here's how I choose to see things:

*My family is safe.
*We didn't lose more animals, it could've been horrific...remember the Massacre of 2012?
*We still have a home.
*Brian's home for this one, I didn't have to go through it alone!
*Stuff is replaceable. We learned not to form much attachment to things after the hurricane.
*The WIND was blowing in our favor, away from the house and propane tank, and it was snowing and not dry outside!!!

All this by the third day of the new year, Way to Go Woodsies!

Hoping everyone has a relaxing weekend.
(We're to expect a little wind this weekend, like 100 mph. I'm sure there will be tales to tell.)

Blessings

It's with great pleasure and intermittent melancholy, we say goodbye to 2013. It was a rough year for our family. Daddy was gone for 8 months and, as always, that's when some of the most trying times occur. We bid adieu to some great friends who moved on to their next assignments. We were able to really appreciate the family and friends we have, we wouldn't have made it without them! We added to our family, a cutie named Whipper, Klassie, misc birds and such. We also welcomed another niece and nephew!!! We have The. Most. Adorable. nieces and nephews, this brings us to 14 grand kids for my parents...holy moly!

We also had to say goodbye to several of the world's best men. All unexpected, all a direct hit to the heart. Sometimes real life just gets a little too close for comfort. While I am very Blessed to have known them and I appreciate the times I had with them, I just was not ready to let go. Death has no age discrimination and all three were gone, IMO, much, much too soon. And I'll have to stop there, Some wounds are still much too fresh.

So, on to 2014...

This year I look forward to more. More of everything. I know there will be heartache but there will also be joy. We are getting really, really close to Brian's retirement days so we are kicking it into high gear on planning and preparing. I have a feeling I'm gonna blink and have a daughter graduated from high school, a "baby" entering middle school, and a retired hubby. Time is flying. So, resolutions? I don't know about any of you but I detest the word for it's expectations, then "failures." We are focusing on continuing to build our foundation, one tiny step at a time. Small, reasonable goals we can accomplish, and in doing so the feelings of accomplishment and growth which will lead to more success. Crossing Fingers, Right!?!

Anyhoo, all that aside, it's time for me to get my groove on. The house has been somewhat neglected with all of the holiday activities and people being home. I just detected a smell needing investigation....ewww....so, off I must be. I hope to be on here more this year and hopefully I'll be able to grow this blog a bit. Anything is possible, correct? ;-)

Much love and many Blessings for the New Year. Thanks for stopping by!

The weather has been so nice and mild this fall, that is, until the last week or so. Today our forecasted high is -12*F, currently we are at -19*F with the "feels like" ringing in at -34*F. I feel it's safe to say winter has arrived!

Over the last few months we have been <strike>fairly</strike> ridiculously busy. We survived flag football, volleyball and cheer (still ongoing) and managed to squeeze in hunting as well. It's been non stop! There is always something to be done around here, always. I'm trying to work on some of the indoors, painting and decorating and such. Brian has a barn to work on for the horses. Oh, did I not mention???

HE'S HOOOOME!!!!!

Finally! We have the Man home, hopefully for awhile. I am excited to get some of the bigger projects underway. So far we have a dog house and a kitty house fashioned from re-purposed pallets. The barn has been started but will obviously be on the back burner for the next few days, until we hit positive high temperatures out there! The basement is also on the list of projects awaiting attentions. I should probably decide on flooring and such soon.

I am also looking into some projects around the house. Pinterest is full of ideas and I figured, why not give'm a go? There are so many things I've pinned I figure it's time to try some of them out...at least the indoor ideas.

So, I thank everyone for stopping by. I know it's been too long since I've posted. Have a wonderful weekend.

Here are a few of our chickens, past and present. We have an eclectic flock, to say the least. The fourth down is our beloved Pippa who is no longer with us. The middle guy is Manny, he thinks he runs the show. He's from our original flock. The little white guy at the bottom is Albert, as in Einstein. Can anyone guess why? Haha These are the best pics I have of the birds so far. They are less than enthusiastic about photo shoots. Enjoy.
I love fall. Fall brings us into the season we hope to welcome Daddy back. Fall means football games, crisp weather and cuddling up. It also brings out the chef in me who hides in the summer heat. It's time to use the oven again, yay!

That being said, it's also a busy time for us. I haven't posted on here often, at all, and I hope to remedy that. The biggest request I get is for pictures of our farm. Well, here's a start. A quick look at our lovely ladies. Belle (with the blaze) and Klassie, our horses. Hoping to put together several more in the near future. Hope you enjoy.

Have a Wonderful Day.

Our daily schedule now includes school and several activities, volleyball practice, cheer practice, chauffeuring back and forth from house to bus stop to school and back home. That's a LOT of miles on the 'ole girl. I'm happy to say she's hanging in there and doing well. Also very fortunate for carpooling friends, saves me multiple trips to town or having to sit for several hours in between pick up times. Football practice will also be starting soon, whatever will I do with all my extra time???

Speaking of football, our first game is this Friday and I am excited to cheer on our 'Horns! I love being a part of this town, such wonderful people. It also means the weather is cooling off, at least at night. We are still in the 90s during the day but the mornings and evenings are mild. I even get to open my windows again...what more could one want? Well, glad you asked...I want my husband home! It's getting closer and I'm getting more impatient. What a surprise, huh?!? Cooler weather means F-O-O-D in our house. When the chill starts to creep in I can't help but ...rubbing hands together and evil laughing... make chili, soups, casseroles and such. Fall is being in the kitchen with my sous chef, Brian, and having people gather in our home. I LOVE it! Pot Lucks? I think I may just have to arrange something.

Cooler weather also coincides with shorter days. This is one of the toughies. It's dark when we head to the bus and dark when we get home. This means more time for blogging? Ha ha Let's hope so. For now I must go and take advantage of the daylight hours in prep for the shorter days. The animals need me as does the <strike>lawn</strike> weed farm I've got going. Farm waits for no one!

Sending Wonderful Thoughts Your Way.
Check. Yes, she's back. Sunshine. I am so very excited! I do enjoy rain and thunderstorms, to a point. However, its gotten to the point my little dude is very anxious. He's started obsessing with weatherbug, reading alerts and checking out the weather maps every five minutes. The subtle shift of afternoon to evening has proven to be a high anxiety time of day. If there is so much as one cloud in the sky, he's on high alert. The sound of the grain and cattle trucks driving by have suddenly become "thunder"... this is not a new sound around here, the trucks, that is. The wind sets him on edge, he's now fully expecting 2" hail with every breeze. This is Montana, the plains, its windy...All. The. Time. I've always noticed him to be a little "high strung", if you will. Quick to cry, screams in anger, sometimes leaving a "calling card" of where he's been in these situations, usually minor. Usually. He's always been a bit of a momma's boy, the youngest of three and the only boy around most of the time. But this week, it's come to a head.

The other day, I was literally preparing myself for another trip to the ER for an appendectomy. He was crying, had cramps and stabby pain, loss of appetite, etc. He was presenting very similar to Lucy when she ended up having her appendix removed. I watched for fever, monitored his pain levels and tried to keep him calm. Eventually he settled down and I continued to ponder the day, his moods and actions, where we'd been and what we'd done. It all kept circling back. The main reason I hesitated on going to the hospital was something he kept saying. He said, "I have a nervous tummy." Okay, I can certainly sympathize with that one. He didn't want me out of his sight, at all. When we were visiting with friends he was just fine but he kept wanting me around when it was just us and the girls. Honestly, he was like our male dogs who must be near/on me at all times. So, I did the 20 questions. I won't go through them all (You're welcome.) but suffice it to say, he misses his daddy. And, obviously, we all do.

It was then I really put two and two together. He is certainly his mother's child. After ruling out a ride to the ER I started really looking at his "symptoms." He wants to be in bed. He wants his S.B. (Soft Blanket) and mommy present at all times. He doesn't have any strength, feels weak. He doesn't want to go outside, ride his bike or play trucks. This is Nick we are talking about, Mr. Outdoors. He was sad, lonely and had an upset tummy. I'm still not ruling out a little stomach something since the girls and I have all had a few queasy moments in the last 24 hours, but I know this is something different going on. He sounds like me. When I have those darker moments I don't like to talk about. When I just get to feeling "funky" for no apparent reason. Low, down, tired and helpless. Yes, I can sympathize. I can sympathize all to well. It makes me rethink the tantrums, the sensitivities, the anger, the frustration, the screaming and yelling, and the tears. So many tears for no (?) reason. Holy Light Bulb Moment, ~smacks forehead~ Duh!

So, here we are right now. I am watching him in a different way and giving him some extra patience and mommy time. He doesn't want to be alone and that is something I can help him with. He got outside for a bit today and he has had an improvement in mood. We've had smiles and giggles, we've also had some tears and fears. As long as mommy's around he seems able to cope. We've had some herbal teas like "Sleepytime Vanilla", "Tension Tamer" and "Sleepytime Echinacea Complete Care" and we've had gatorade and water, just in case there's a dehydration issue. We are slowly getting an appetite back and seeming a little relaxed. We seem to be pulling out of the funk.

I now know there may be an underlying reason for all the negative feelings. I listen differently and observe more. I see pieces that may, or may not, be falling into a certain pattern. I can be on the lookout for too much of any one thing. I know, I am no doctor or therapist, nor do I pretend to be. I simply see myself in him and pray he doesn't have as many struggles as I have had in this area. For now I think we are okay and I am optimistic he will continue to do better. I certainly have to be more aware, for everyone's sake.

So, with this new addition to the stress I am much more anxious to have Daddy home. Maybe he'll settle down a bit then, maybe not. But, I will at least have someone to talk to about it. Has anyone else been through this? Please, let me know!

Hoping everyone has a wonderful weekend.

It's been a busy summer around here and it's getting close to "Back to School" time. Eighteen days til school starts, not that I'm counting. We've managed to find several pairs of jeans to fit each kiddo, and in one day---at one store! Couldn't believe it! I still have supplies to buy but the list isn't out for third grade and middle/high schools will get their lists the first day. The girls will register next week for their classes. Before we know it we'll have cheer practice again and games and homework...ah, the return of fall. I am kinda excited about football season, can't lie. The best part about BTS this year is it's relation to Brian's return. Around two more months-ish, I think. I can't wait! I am so beyond ready to share this workload again. Knowwhatimeeeeeean?

In keeping with the WoodsFam entertainment, we had another fun day yesterday. This time I broke the hitch on the water trailer. You know, since the jack has been fixed. So, with the help of daughter and her friend, we managed to move the water tank back to the bed of the truck. What fun, What Fun! Oh, yes, I can't wait for backup. What I haven't figured out is why the hitch was sitting so low??? I mean, I use the same truck to haul water and, if anything, one would think it would be lighter once the water drained. Hmmm...

Anyway, the excitement continues. We are still working on a round pen for the horses. I think it might actually work, when I get a few free minutes to actually work on it. It's not super high on the priority list for me. If anyone has seen inside my house, you would certainly understand. Again, school starting will hopefully be a big help. At least no one will be here to immediately undo what's done. LOL

So, how are your Back To School plans going? Any big plans for the fall? I'd love to hear!

Much Love,

It's been another busy chapter in the WoodsFam's Life. We've worked on cleaning up and clearing our yard, working with animals, organizing the house, and cleaning (s-l-o-w-l-y).

Our <strike>yard</strike> life is a work in progress, always. We've managed to work on some of our bigger projects (our "hoard" pile) and a few smaller, like getting some animal areas bettered. Kyleigh and Lucy have been working with the horses and we've seen a small (yay!) improvement in temperament and cooperation. This goes FAR for us! It's been hot, for the most part, and we've had a few storms. Got some bigger hail last week, along with some damage to our trucks, camper and roof....yes, that darn roof again! I will just never understand why the previous owner shingled when it would have been much, much better to put a metal roof on. Seriously, the cost difference really isn't all that much but the benefits of metal are so many.

As for our house, I've been trying to stay in the air conditioning, mid 90s is pretty hot up here where I wear shorts and flip flops for 50*F days. <strike>We</strike> I am trying to wrangle this place up a bit but I'm afraid the assistance is less than consistent, in direct contrast to the complaining. Ugh. But, I am pushing forward and hopeful we will get some sort of cooperation. I admit, I tend to run out of steam between working and "nagging" the children. I was able to steam clean my carpets, Thank You Lord! It looks like I am gonna be saving up to buy another steam cleaner as renting one would pay for it within 6 months or so. I think I managed to bring up a hefty amount of gross to the top of the carpet in addition to what hit the dump bucket. I think I may need to steam once a week for awhile to get it under control...

I am still working on photos, I need to watermark before I post. I should have several but they will be the last. My camera got dropped and no longer works. 5 Years was a pretty good run, I guess. So, maybe I'll save some more and cross my fingers for one of the "better" models. Always something exciting.

What are your summer projects? Share 'em here!

Have a Wonderful Afternoon.
1. The Woods Animals are just as crazy as the people, maybe even more so.

2. Brian and I love to watch the sunsets out here, there's nothing like it. Can't wait for him to get home!

3. Kyleigh is our "Crazy Cat Lady."

4. Lucy actually has animal DNA...seriously, she's the dog whisperer.

5. Nicholas is a down and dirty farm boy! A hard worker, when he chooses.

So, apparently this posting of random things is somewhat popular on blogs. I thought it would be easier, not so much. I kept these farm related and a little more on the personal side. Not too personal... I am slowly working back to my posts and trying to determine what might be entertaining or inspiring.

If there are any questions, requests, ideas out there, please let me know. I want to keep you coming back, if only to watch the "train wreck" that is our life! LOL We are all about humor here and I hope to share with you those moments, as well as other not so funny moments.

Thanks for reading,
It's been over a month since my last post, it's been crazy around here. "Grannie" came to visit and spent three weeks, I'm not sure how she did it. It was a busy few weeks but I still don't know if we really accomplished anything. I did get some much needed sleep but it didn't come without the guilt of sleeping in while mom was up with kids. Of course, now my schedule is completely off and I'm trying desperately to hop back on some kind of routine.

I'm "Baby Stepping" my way and I am hoping to be better about getting some posts going again. We've added to our little farm and I've had requests for more pictures so I'll be working on that too. I even took pictures while out and about with my mom. I am certainly no photographer but I think the scenery helps make up for that.

See ya soon.
From gardening/farming to cleaning/organizing, there are websites and blogs aplenty! I click on one post and end up X-many pages later on umpteen different blogs/sites. So, I decided to take the lazy way out and give you a list of a few (lot) of my favorites out there. These are blogs I find myself visiting over and over again, trying out their recipes or livestock tricks or any other such thing I find interesting. Our little hobby farm/homestead/family life is touched every day by new experiences. Whether we are growing spiritually, learning to live a more healthful life or just getting thumped on the head with a "why didn't I think of that?!?" moment, we are always learning. Isn't that why we're here? LOL So, without further ado and in no particular order:
***Disclaimer***

This turned out much longer than I intended.

It's been just over two years since we moved out of town and attempted to build a little farm. Much has happened in this relatively short time. We've had Daddy come and go several times, leaving us to figure some things out on our own. We've added animals to the mix and worked a bit on our house. We've added a little bit to the outbuilding we started with, a huge shed. We now have chicken coops and a turkey pen, a place for rabbits and more fencing. I have a few raised garden beds and we planted several trees, none of which took. There have been vehicle changes, with more to come. (Momma will need a vehicle and Kyleigh will be getting her license soon.) We've had friends, family, visitors, house guests and <strike>"squatters"</strike> a few guys who've lived with us while in transition. LOL, squatters, Classic!

We gave homeschooling a try, ultimately choosing public schools again. This was the best choice for us but I still miss the homeschooling from time to time. We have been Blessed with wonderful teachers, a dedicated principal/superintendent and an awesome elementary principal, not to mention the most wonderful staff. We have made wonderful friends and have been mostly accepted by "the locals". Ha! We've had new experiences, like brandings, and become a part of this community. We feel the pride of our little towns and it is wonderful to have that sense of family/community, which we have longed for. Being a part of the military is it's own group, which we will always remain, but living here has been so much more than we could have hoped. We have been through some tough times with this new family, the losses felt throughout the entire area, and we've had a great time cheering on the home team. Go Horns! Our kids have blossomed. They've seen so much of the world in cities and suburbs, this "ranch life" has been an awesome new discovery. They are so much more engaged. I can't think of any other way to put it. Kyleigh has really stepped up with the animal care and has matured into a beautiful young lady. Lucy has opened up and has made so many new friends, some feel like we've known them forever. Nick is our little, or not so, doer. Whether it's shoveling snow or running the weedeater this kid knows how to work.

I'm just so grateful to be where I am. I look forward to many more years and experiences in this little, tiny piece of the Big Sky. I think I may have to share a few stories from these first years, the blog is only about 8 months old and there were some HI-larious moments, some terrifying, I have yet to share. Hopefully you'll get as big a kick out of them too. We ARE the Woodsies. This IS our life. You just can't make this stuff up!

How many of you are "living the dream"? Care to share? I'm all <strike>ears</strike> eyes.

In closing, I leave you with a phrase which has become synonymous with the WoodsFam....

"That's NEVER happened, I've just NEVER seen/heard _____________. (Fill in the blank as you wish, it's probably been uttered.)

Oh, and let's not forget "That's a first." And NO, these are not spoken as compliments. They are always stated with shock, awe, confusion and/or disbelief. Maybe I'll share some of those moments in the near future.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!
Wait, the girls are having friend time away from the house...they will have a busy couple days with the last minute rush.

So far, I've managed to get the carpet somewhat cleaned. Let me tell ya, a steam cleaner that won't spray is a bit of a pain. I've been mixing up a cleaner in a bottle and having to spray the carpet, wait, add water and then suck it all up. Not the quickest method but at least it sucks...hahaha. The living room is slowly clearing out from all the end of the school year crap and it's finally starting to smell better with the windows open daily. My bedroom is just about there, some dusting and clean sheets ought to do it. Then I will be changing the sheets on Nick's bed so I have clean sheets. Yes, my room is the guest room. Or maybe I'll just move out to the camper...hmmmm. That doesn't sound so bad, the bed is super comfy, I can keep the wine chilled AND use the bathroom...SCORE!

So, there's my first week of summer in a nutshell. Looking forward to time with family and friends and whatever entertains the household while Daddy is gone. It's looking to be beautiful weather soon and I'm ready to chill and not play beat the clock. I look forward to some R&R, long baths and quiet reading time I hear the water calling out to me and the sun as well. It's gonna be a good summer, yep.

What are your summer plans?
We've had too many heartbreaks in the last few days. Our family is just fine, thankfully, but there are other families experiencing great loss. It's so frustrating when you want so badly to help but there's just really nothing you can do but pray. I know prayer is help but I want to do something more. It brings back so many memories. Sad, lonely, depressing memories of our losses back in 2005. I know I can't relate completely but what I can relate to is devastating. A roller coaster of emotions and no way to ease them. So many tears, so many uncertain moments, so much loss. And mine were spaced out over several months, not several hours.

Life changes so quickly and we do our best to hold on and go with the flow. When these things happen our first response is "Why?" Why God? And we can answer it immediately with, "it is not for us to know now." A closer relationship with God? Our family? Our friends? It makes one reflect on life and loss. I know I certainly have those "WTFudge?" moments in my life. What can we do from here? Everyone has their own way of coping, some better than others. It's those who have difficulty coping who are on my mind this week.

That's where my desire to help is aimed. I want to help people, emotionally. Anyone can help clean, send cash etc., but not everyone is willing to sit and listen. It's hard to hear sometimes, how people suffer quietly. Every day there is someone who could use a smile or a hug, an "I'm proud of you." We lose so much on a daily basis we become blind or immune to it until it smacks them in the face. Please, be that shoulder to lean on. Everyone has a need. A quiet room and conversation with a friend, a random hello in the parking lot, unleashing the dam of tears you just can't hold anymore. A need to release.

Apparently the need to release is right here. I thank you for those who continued reading, I know it's not an uplifting topic today, Debbie Downer In the House! I hope to gain some positive mojo soon, this stinks. I am also hoping to share something FUN soon, I think the world could use a <strike>little</strike> LOT more laughter. So I leave you with this:
I've been chomping at the bit, if you will, since about January. It's finally time and we're starting with the seeds. We may even have to put some plants in too, it's a little warmer than I expected soooo....

This spring <strike>we</strike> I am hoping to plant lettuce, beets, radishes, carrots, snap peas, garlic and celery, possibly a few marigolds for insect control. Then it's straight into the summer veges, tomatoes, peppers, basil, chives, corn (?), onions, broccoli and dill. I may even try some green beans and I would really like to get an herb garden started this year. I've been so wishy-washy about where I want things it's been difficult to commit to one area in particular.

I've also got a very large tire I can plant in, if the cats will stop using it as their own private "rest" area. I'm thinking succulents, I always forget to water the stinkin thing. There are so many more ideas I have but I am trying to keep myself at a slower pace. I'm afraid if I put too much in the ground at one time I'll lose most of it, again. We could really use some trees around here but the 11 we planted last year didn't seem to take...Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. I also put in three blueberries and they are not looking like returning either. I'd really like some fruit trees but I think that's just a bit more than I'm ready for. Maybe this fall when I have help in the manual labor department.

*Update*

I did it. I got one raised bed planted, YAY! I've got asparagus, kale and marigolds planted and I seeded collards, spinach, radishes, carrots, snap peas, chamomile, spearmint, lemon balm, garlic chives, cilantro, parsley, and I don't remember what else. I'm horrible with labeling and such, I end up with a surprise garden. I also threw (literally) some seeds into the big tire...poppies, morning glories, sweet peas, and others. It's just my little "survival of the fittest" flowerbed. I used some seeds I had from other years, who knows what will happen.

So that's it, for now. We are expecting thunderstorms for the next several days, bring on the rain. And the Thunder, I Love Thunder. Hopefully we'll grow something, whatever. I just love to get the food out of my own yard. I am far from a planning type gardener, it's about the only thing I can be a little "wreck less" with. I guess that's what makes it such a good outlet for me.

What kind of gardener are you? Do you stay away from all things green? Are you a graph paper and plotting type? Or do you go "rogue" like I do? I'd love to hear from you.

Have a Fabulous Weekend.

Today we are venturing into the kitchen again with some more DIY. That's right, y'all, we are gonna make some Coffee Creamer! I stumbled into this adventure by accident. The other night I made some donut holes and had three different "flavors." Powdered sugar, of course, chocolate and cinnamon sugar. With the leftover mix I decided to try it in my coffee as a sweetener and it was pretty good. It got me to thinking how much I like to flavor my coffee and creamer is ridiculously expensive, IMO. I mean, who doesn't want to save money??? I also like to see what I can make with the ingredients I have available in the house. This is super simple and a wonderful way to use up the powdered milk I have left from bread making. There's always so stinkin' much...

Gather Ingredients:

Dry Milk

White Sugar

Brown Sugar

Powdered Sugar

Cinnamon

Cocoa

I then put everything in the blender (recipes follow), blend and voila, creamer. It would be just as easy to put it in the container and shake, shake, shake...

Cinnamon Sugar:

1 Cup Dry Milk

1/4 Cup White Sugar

1/4 Cup Brown Sugar

1/4 :Powdered Sugar

1 TBLS Cinnamon

Mocha:

1 Cup Dry Milk

1/4 Cup Cocoa

1/2 Cup White Sugar

Now, these are the measurements I used and these are the first batches. I will make these again but some changes will be made. On the cinnamon sugar, I would use more brown sugar (for a caramel flavor) and less cinnamon. For the mocha I think more cocoa would be better. I have discovered the addition of extracts give me so many more variations. I'm a huge amaretto fan so, of course, almond extract would be fantabulous. The possibilities are endless. I would most certainly make a bigger batch but I just wanted to fill these little jars for now. Yes, I am going through a glassware/storage phase and I LOVE it!

So, I hope this gives you a start. I would love to hear what other flavors/recipes you may have. Please, feel free to share in the comments section. I feel like I talk to myself most of the time, which I do in reality, but it would be great to get some feedback.

Here's to a Great Week!

Well, it's been a year since I started my journey of 1000 Gifts. Last year my mom gifted us with the photography companion to One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp. I took the challenge and ended up buying the full book. I was hoping to hit at least one "gift" a day for the year. I got to #339, not too bad. I went through those days of listing several and then there were those I didn't list any. It's not anywhere near as easy as I had thought. I don't even want to know how many "repeats" there are in there, I'll chalk it up to being especially grateful for those.

I will be reading through these gifts today as a reminder of just how blessed I am. I have drifted away to a point and I need to recenter and focus on the beauty of the life we have. Somewhere in all the shuffles of daily life, I have allowed myself to forget the most important part of my days...gratitude. Gratitude, reflection, recharging...they are all the part of my day I should bring to the forefront. It's in these moments I can really understand just how happy I truly am.
Here's to another year of Gifts.
I'm stuck in here working on floors and bedrooms and bathrooms... I would LOVE to grab a book, some suntan oil, a huge glass of sweet-ish tea and a towel and lay out on the trampoline. It would be sooo wonderful. I'd even enjoy working a little more on the fence or starting my garden, darn responsibilities inside! Curses! But hey, if the boys can drink some cold beer while working outside, I'm thinking a little wine would be spectacular today. Ooooo, Sangria... Who's it On? I guess I should wait til at least noon. Blah.

So, today I am focusing on beating this house into submission. I've got muddy floors, gross carpets, laundry and a tween's bedroom in some serious need of intervention. Maybe, just maybe, once her room is rearranged she will find the excitement in keeping it nice. It's a good hope albeit not likely. The grounding has helped a little bit but I'm really not one to enjoy the enforcing of the discipline. It happens but I think I am just punishing myself most of the time. Aaargh! (maybe it's a rum day, matey) LOL

So, off I go into "the depths of despair"... Yes, I just used an Anne Shirley quote. Wish me luck and pray I return unscathed, mostly. Let's be real, AmIRight? And how good will it feel to have clean floors again? I don't remember but I think it was, refreshing??? I am determined to get to the actual floor again, I've already done one pass and it smells like mud in here now, yuck.

Today is rainy so I spent time working on Nick's bedroom today. I'll post pictures once I'm done but for now it's not quite ready. I did get the rest of his furniture moved upstairs, sweet! I'm in search of some fabric and paint and ideas.

So, for a little Farm Friday entertainment I've decided to share a few pictures of this week's guest, from yesterday. Here he is helping himself to the horses' water. It's been very helpful to have him visiting as he keeps pushing our fencing down. This is the turkey/duck pen, temporarily including horses. It was a preexisting area and not meant for big animals, obviously. I did get a start on the horse fencing yesterday. I got the gate installed but hey, it's just me and Kyleigh working on it and that stuff is H-E-A-V-Y! Fortunately, our friend showed up to visit and volunteered to come back later on and pound some serious posts for me, YaY!, and possibly help stretch the fence. I Love living here! He was paid in tamales.

Mr. Brown trying to get his attention.

So, later on he came back and was just outside our door. Mr. Brown was desperately trying to get his point across, to no avail. He's gotten very comfortable here. He seems pretty docile but I'm not willing to challenge him to a showdown...

I'm Right HERE! GOOOOO!!!! LOL

You'll note Mr. Brown is a little confused and offended to be ignored. The first few times, the bull listened and sauntered on down the road, not so much now.

Mom, he's not listening...WTHeck?

So, there you have it, a typical WoodsFam day. The bull was rounded up later yesterday afternoon and was back at it this morning. Fortunately, I didn't notice until I heard a truck and saw someone trying to wrangle him again. Too Funny...except the fence part...UGH! LOL
